Floral Design 101

Instructor: Rebecca Muller

This class will introduce students to the basic elements of floral design while arranging an autumnal, foraged floral centerpiece in foam free mechanics. Sustainable floral design can be both meditative and grounding - this class will equip attendees with knowledge of tools, mechanics, and basic process to explore more deeply on their own or in a future class. Ample seasonal flowers and mechanics are included in the class fee. Vases will be available for purchase on the day of class and will range in price from $8-25 - or attendees can bring a soup bowl to use! Tools (flower snips and wire cutters) are available to borrow during class, or you may bring your own.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the primary elements of floral design

  2. Learn the essentials of preparing and caring for fresh cut flowers before and after design

  3. Learn how to create a simple, foam free mechanic for floral design

  4. Create a floral centerpiece using seasonal, foraged flowers and dried flowers

Rebecca Muller is the owner of Locaflora, a neighborhood flower shop sourcing exclusively local flowers from within 100 miles of Gettysburg, PA. She is self taught, and has been arranging flowers for weddings, events, and all the little moments in between for over 4 years. Prior to her flower career, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Integrative Science from HU where she continued on as a research and teaching assistant. She has 3 semesters of experience a lab instructor, and 2 years as a fellow in STEAM project based learning, which she now applies to her methodology for floral design instruction.
