Details: Explore mark-making and blending with a “Pastel Primer." Complete a four-section art sampler, from a still life, as you learn various techniques for working with soft pastels. A great introduction to this expressive medium.

Objectives:

1) Explore 4 basic techniques of pastel work:

  • Blending soft pastels on pastel paper with tools such as stumps/tortillions, color shaper tools, rags and sponges.

  • Blending soft pastels on pastel paper using hands only.

  • Hatching and cross-hatching to build tone and value using pastel pencils.

  • Apply varied marks of broken color to build tone and value.

2) Create a four-section sampler using these various techniques on pastel paper

3) Choose a favorite technique and try it out on paper of a different texture

Supplies: Feel free to bring your own pastels; there will be some to share. Paper provided.
