Sharon Birch has been creating art for decades and has lived in Gettysburg for much of that time. She joined the Waldos & Co. creative community in December of 2015 as a studio holder. While primarily a painter, she has also experimented with collage, printmaking, and bookbinding. Her artistic passion is color – mixing, juxtaposing, delineating, and layering color. Sharon’s work is influenced by the visual language of comics and the techniques of illustration but she applies this in an abstract context. Her current work, while appearing to consist of two distinctly different styles, emerged in tandem as she alternated methods capturing the feel of loose color and hard lines. The Stained Glass series captures pockets of color within defined shapes while the Puzzle series emphasizes the edges where patterns and images connect on the canvas. In all of these paintings, she is exploring the way color can be accentuated by the presence of black lines.
